U & I News
The U & I group will begin meeting on Monday,
November 13th. The "U & I" Group had a wonderful
turnout for their first meeting of the fall with 30 present. Our entertainment
was superb and desserts delicious. Anyone is welcome to this group at any time.
For October we are going to the Palace Theatre on Friday, Oct. 5th to see live
entertainment entitled "A Broadway Revue". Please meet at the church at 6:30pm
to car pool. The program doesn't begin until 7:30pm, but we don't want to be
rushed and tickets are not being bought in advance, so we should be early to sit
as a group. Cost is $13.
Young Adults
Do you crave more God in your life? Join us at Pendleton Center United
Methodist Church the third Saturday of every month for the “Young Adult’s
Monthly Event!” We will be bringing people together for ages 18 – 30ish and
combining devotion with fun outings to strengthen & build our relationships with
God and each other. In the past we have gone to baseball games at Dunn Tire
Park, go-cart racing, movies, putt –putt, out for coffee and ice cream.
If you’d like to make Christian friends and have a great time while bringing
more good into your life, then come out on Saturday, October 20th at 6pm. We
meet in the Fellowship Hall. Then, mark your calendars for Saturday, November
17th and December 15th.
College & Careers/Young Adults
We meet every Saturday from 6:30 pm to 8 pm.
Health & Wellness
Team
Hello family,
As your Parish Nurse monthly, I am providing
information on High Blood Pressure and its impact on a human body; the worst is
a stroke. High blood pressure effects can be limited through diet and exercise.
Yes, I know both are difficult to manage because of time and commitments each of
face daily. One thing I do know that helps me refocus on staying healthy, is
that God has stated “I will always be with you” (Exodus 3:12). This means to me
no matter how hard work or life becomes, God will be with me and my efforts to
put down the candy bar; walk up 2 flights of stairs, or eat smaller portions at
meals. I know God is also there for you too.
Please consider adjusting your lifestyle and
have your blood pressure checked monthly. Our church has the UB Pharmacy School students here the 3rd Saturday & Sunday of each month,
September through May to check blood pressure and answer medical questions.
These clinics are through efforts of Dr. Gayle Brazeau and the UB Pharmacy
students.

The focus of the Health and Wellness Team is
to support our church family, to maintain each individuals wellness/health and
sustain each person's independence. To do this we need volunteers to
prepare and provide meals as needed, drivers, and people to pick up supplies.
This would be on a short term limited need basis. Please consider offering an
hour of your time to support our church family members when a need arises.

Caring for the
Congregation
Jesus tells us in the gospel of Matthew to give water to the thirsty, food to
the hungry, clothes to the naked, to visit those in prison and to care for the
sick. As this congregation grows, help is needed to care for the concerns
of this Body of Christ. Is God calling you to help take care of this
growing congregation?
There are many different ways to be a part of
this ministry. Such as keeping our college students connected, making
telephone calls and sending notes & cards to the home bound, visiting those in
nursing homes, being a support to those in time of need, and shepherding a group
of families.
If this is a ministry that God is leading you
to be a part of, call the office or for Pastor Suzanne.

“Each one should use whatever gift
he has received to serve others,
faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms.”
1 Peter 4:10
Cell phones – they
were patterned after the “communicator” on Star Trek when invented by a
Motorola engineer named Martin Cooper 34 years ago. Today, they’re
everywhere. We’ve come to depend upon them as our lifeline. We turn around
and head back home when we forget them. We feel naked and cut-off without
them!
What if we treated
the Bible with the same importance? How many of us actually read this
historical best seller, let alone carry it with us every day? Or do we keep
it in a nightstand drawer and expect the wisdom to transfer through osmosis?
Well, book osmosis didn’t work in college the night before the exam, and I
fear it won’t work with the Bible either.
Traditionally in the
martial arts, all belts started out white. Through continued use and
practice, they grew darker and dirtier. A “black” belt was a natural
indicator of the years of training and inherent proficiency of the wearer.
Today, I look over at my Bible with its pristine cover and binding. It could
pass for new. With all due respect, a tattered and torn Bible would be a
more welcome sight, and a sign of more properly aligned priorities.
I came across a
self-help book recently entitled “The Richest Man Who Ever Lived: King
Solomon's Keys to Success in Work and in Life” by Steven Scott. People are
paying $17 for a book, which is based on the Book of Proverbs! Why not go
directly to the source?
So how do we get
started? Start with a good study Bible – New International Version (NIV). It
has notes in the margins on what verses mean and who the players are. You
can pick up a reading list in the Fellowship Hall or print off a copy from
the PCUMC website (PendletonCenter.org). It suggests an order which will
make the most sense, and set you on either a one-year or four-year track to
cover the entire Book. Start in the privacy of your own home, or come to one
of our four friendly Bible Studies classes; Sunday Morning, Monday
(women’s), Wednesday (2 classes), Saturday (college & career), and the 2 new
Sunday evening classes to interpret and discuss passages.
Study and prayer are
the price for eternal salvation. And along this spiritual journey, we stand
to gain greater peace, satisfaction and joy in our Earthly existence. I’m
still going to carry my cell phone, but my Bible is now an accessory I’ll
turn my car around for.
God Bless,
Len Thornton
